Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma led a Rhododendron plantation drive at Sangmein in Upper Shillong to mark World Environment Day 2026. Organized by the Department of Forests and Environment, the event focused on propagating the Rhododendron arboreum, known locally as Tiew Saw and Latuthiñ. The initiative took place at the Rhododendron Trek, bringing together government officials, local communities, and students from three area schools to promote ecological restoration.

During the event, Chief Minister Sangma addressed the crowd and emphasized that environmental initiatives should prioritize public engagement over traditional protocols. He stated, "Programmes like these should not be about the VIPs and the ministers but should be for the public and the citizens." He also took time to felicitate students, acknowledging the essential role younger generations play in the future of environmental protection.

The Chief Minister urged citizens to look beyond the annual observance and adopt sustainable habits year-round. He argued that collective, small-scale actions such as recycling, conserving energy, and reducing vehicle use form the foundation of meaningful ecological change. According to Sangma, while World Environment Day serves as a necessary reminder to recommit to nature, the real goal is to transform sustainability into an everyday lifestyle.
