Shillong: Meghalaya just grew its public transit footprint. Officials added 14 air-conditioned diesel buses to the Ka Bos Jong Ngi network and opened a new route between the Inter State Bus Terminus at Mawlai-Mawiong and Lad Smit. Damanbait Lamare, the MUDA chairman, flagged off the new fleet on July 3 in Shillong.
These buses join the 15 already running from the pilot launch in February. That brings the total fleet to 29 vehicles. The government wants to fix the gaps in the city's movement. Urban Affairs Secretary WAM Booth Shadap noted the goal is to provide a reliable network for residents. Shadap said, "The newly introduced buses would improve connectivity to schools, hospitals, markets, workplaces and other key destinations, while extending services to areas that previously lacked regular public transport."
The buses pack modern tech. Commuters get GPS tracking, CCTV, mobile chargers, and digital ticketing. This expansion follows the addition of five electric buses in June under the PM eBus Sewa Scheme. Officials hope the combination of new routes and better hardware will slash congestion and make city travel easier.
