Shillong: The Meghalaya BJP stepped into the ongoing legal row on Tuesday. They are pushing the state government to appoint a local lawyer as the Advocate General. Party spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang told reporters that the state should tap into its own deep pool of legal talent before looking elsewhere. He argued that hiring outsiders makes little sense when qualified local practitioners are ready for the job.
Kharkrang blamed the government for the escalating conflict. He said officials should have met with the agitating lawyers immediately instead of letting the situation spiral. The dispute is not just about one comment in a courtroom. While a remark by Kumar regarding the protection of women lawyers served as a catalyst, the friction goes much deeper. The government must address these specific grievances with an open mind.
The boycott continues to cause significant collateral damage. "Ultimately, who suffers? It is the litigants who will be suffering," Kharkrang noted. He warned that the state cannot simply treat this as a closed legal matter while the public pays the price. The government must prioritize consultation and search for home-grown solutions to constitutional appointments.
