Meghalaya BJP Criticizes Government Over Unpaid GHADC Salaries

Shillong: State BJP vice president and Tura MDC Bernard N. Marak has accused the Meghalaya government of failing to meet its financial obligations to Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) staff. Marak claims the government is violating a 2014 tripartite agreement signed by the central government, the state, and the ANVC and ANVC-B groups.

According to Marak, the state has misused the required escrow account mechanism, resulting in a significant backlog of unpaid salaries. He stated that this failure has caused immense financial hardship for council employees who rely on timely disbursements.

The BJP leader also criticized the administration for breaking promises made during 2025 labor protests. A government sub-committee had pledged to credit salaries on the first day of each month, but that commitment remains unfulfilled. Marak urged the state to honor the original 2014 pact, which was signed in the presence of then-Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, and immediately release all pending and future pay to the workers.
