Meghalaya Alliance Leaves By-Election Strategy Open for Member Parties

Shillong: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance-II (MDA-II) has decided against enforcing a common strategy for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election. During a meeting on Wednesday, leaders agreed that constituent parties are free to field their own candidates, support another, stay neutral, or avoid the contest entirely.

Paul Lyngdoh, the alliance's parliamentary party secretary, confirmed that no coalition whip will be issued for the by-election. While the coalition maintained a unified stance in backing James P.K. Sangma for the Rajya Sabha, the decision to allow independent positions for the Lok Sabha seat reflects the complex political dynamics within the state.

The by-election has already attracted a crowded field of contenders. The VPP has nominated Batskhem Myrboh, while the NPP selected D.R.L. Nonglait to challenge for the seat. The UDP entered the race with senior advocate Vivan G.K. Kynta, and the Congress is counting on veteran former MP Vincent H. Pala to regain their influence in the region. With the BJP expected to announce its own candidate soon, the contest is shaping up to be a competitive multi-party showdown.
