Mawkyrwat youth group demands urgent repairs to waterlogged power station

Shillong: A transformer substation in Mawkyrwat sits submerged in water during heavy rains, creating a lethal hazard for local residents and students. The Seng Samla Shnong Mawkyrwat accuses the MeECL of gross negligence.

Rain turns the electrical site into a pool. The equipment sits dangerously low. Despite a formal complaint filed by the Dorbar Shnong Mawkyrwat in February 2026, the utility company has ignored every plea for help.

SSSM president Kitborsing Lyngdoh claims officials inspected the site but failed to fix the problem. He says the company appears to be ignoring the obvious danger. "During rainfall, this substation looks like a fish pond. We requested the office to lift or reinstall the transformer at a higher level, but they have done nothing. It seems they are waiting for a tragedy to happen before acting," Lyngdoh said.

The youth group gave the utility a few days to relocate the transformer to higher ground. They promise stern action if MeECL continues to ignore the threat to public safety.
