Guwahati: Two to six quintals of fish floated to the surface of a historic pond in Gajpuriya Nepali, Moran. The die-off occurred over the last four days. This site sits under the Moran Revenue Circle in the Dibrugarh district of Assam. It serves a public Namghar and nearly 65 local families.
The dead fish were large, weighing between 2 kg and 7 kg each. Locals fear the water is poisoned. They suspect contamination or toxic substances killed the wildlife. Scientists need to test the water to be sure. Without data, the cause remains a mystery.
The site is a piece of history. Locals call it Rajar Dinor Pukhuri or Phukan Pukhuri. It hosts social, cultural, and religious gatherings. Despite the scale of the rot, no one from the Fisheries Department has shown up. Residents claim, "the cause can only be established after scientific examination of the pond water."
The community wants the district administration to step in. They need officials to grab samples and stop future outbreaks. For now, the neighborhood waits for a response from the state.
