Imphal: Manipur concluded its eight-day Kang Festival this Friday. Thousands of worshipers filled the Imphal valley for the final rites known as Kang Len. This ceremony marks the return journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra to their abode.
Devotees swarmed the Palace Compound and the Shri Shri Bijoy Govinda Temple. They pulled an elaborately decorated chariot while offering prayers for peace and prosperity. The streets echoed with devotional songs and traditional rituals. Across town at the ISKCON Temple on Airport Road, hundreds more joined a Kang Chingba procession. They marched through the temple grounds while chanting hymns and performing kirtans.
The celebration reached nearly every leikai across the valley. Young and old joined forces to pull smaller chariots. These local gatherings highlight the deep cultural ties of the tradition. The festival showcases unique Manipuri customs including the performance of Sankirtan and the distribution of khechri prasad. Organizers noted that these events strengthen the spirit of communal harmony, stating that the customs "continue to strengthen the spirit of communal harmony, cultural heritage and collective devotion that have long been associated with the festival."
