Imphal: Manipur is seeing a surge in electric vehicle adoption. Registrations climbed 70 percent between January and October 27, 2026. The state logged 1,363 new electric vehicles during that window. This represents a sharp rise from the 1,251 units recorded in the first nine months of the year, compared to just 737 units during the same period in 2025.

Three-wheelers, including autos and goods carriers, remain the top pick for local buyers. They account for 43 percent of all registrations through September. Two-wheelers follow with a 36 percent market share. Despite this momentum, the state still lags behind the rest of the country. Electric models make up only 4.6 of every 100 new vehicles in Manipur, significantly lower than the 10.7 percent national average. The data ranks the state 27th out of 36 states and union territories for total registrations.

Charging infrastructure is growing to support this shift. Most operations center on Imphal, which currently hosts about 13 public and semi-public stations. Indian Oil Corporation Limited has installed 60 kW CCS2 fast DC chargers at key spots including JNIMS Porompat, Manipur University, Lamshang, and Malom. Officials have also placed chargers at the Imphal International Airport parking lot. As the state builds out this network, it aims to support a growing fleet. The state government notes, "Manipur has initiated the development of its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, with current operations concentrated primarily within major urban centers."
