Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met with Fisheries Department officials on July 13, 2026, to overhaul local fish production. The state is cutting costs by reducing imports. It now spends 200 crore rupees on outside fish, half the previous 400 crore bill. The goal is total self-sufficiency.
Annual production sits at 4.5 crore kilograms against a total demand of 6.75 crore kilograms. The state now produces 37,125 metric tons of table fish by using scientific methods in private ponds, wetlands, and natural lakes. The Chief Minister stated: "The Government remains committed to strengthening the fisheries sector by promoting sustainable pisciculture and enhancing the livelihoods of our fishing communities."
Officials released 10 lakh fingerlings into Loktak Lake. They also launched a river ranching program across 12 rivers, including the Thoubal, Nambul, and Imphal. The state partnered with ICAR-CIFRI to build reservoir fisheries in the 1,100-hectare Mapithel Reservoir located in Kamjong district. This project aims to create jobs for the tribal population.
The Loktak Livelihood Mission is turning invasive phumdis into organic fertilizer. Meanwhile, the National Welfare for Fishermen scheme funds tube wells, community tanks, and low-cost houses for needy fishers. The government continues to train locals in carp breeding and reservoir management. Officials also host events like the Emoniu Fish Festival and National Fish Farmers Day to connect producers directly with buyers.
