Imphal: Manipur marked Patriots’ Day on August 13, 2026, to honor the heroes who fell defending the state against the British Empire during the 1891 Anglo-Manipuri War. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh led the commemorations. He paid floral tributes at Hicham Yaicham Pat in Moirangkhom and the Temple of Thangal General in the Palace Compound.

Events spanned the state. District administrations hosted programs while a Manipur Rifles contingent fired a gun salute. Key officials, including the Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker, cabinet ministers, MLAs, the Chief Secretary, the Security Advisor, and the DGP, attended these ceremonies. They honored the men who died for the sovereignty of Manipur.

The British executed Crown Prince Bir Tikendrajit and General Thangal on August 13, 1891. They were hanged publicly at Feida Pung near the historic Imphal Polo Ground. Inside the Manipur jail, authorities executed Niranjan Subedar, Pukhrambam Kajao, and Chirai Naga. Others faced exile. The British deported Maharaj Kulachandra and 21 more to Kalapani in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Singh called on the public to preserve unity and territorial integrity. He urged the youth to mirror the selflessness of those fallen heroes. "Let us move forward together with hope and determination, united in our resolve to build a stronger, more peaceful and developed Manipur," the Chief Minister stated. He emphasized that the state’s strength rests in the resilience and cooperation of its people.

The government also used the day to announce the Chief Minister's Police Medal for Gallantry for five officers and the Police Medal for Outstanding Devotion to Duty for 10 personnel.
