Shillong: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh chaired a Unified Command security meeting Monday at the Civil Secretariat in Imphal. The session focused on tightening law and order across the state. Leaders reviewed security conditions along the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway and the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway. These routes are the state's main lifelines.
Ethnic violence starting May 3, 2023, choked traffic on NH-2 through Kangpokpi district. Blockades and security threats have blocked essential goods and stranded travelers for over a year. The high-level meeting included Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, Chief Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, and Director General of Police Mukesh Singh. Major General Gaurav Sharma of the Assam Rifles and Major General Subhankar Basu of the 57 Mountain Division also attended alongside CRPF officials.
The Unified Command aims to sharpen intelligence and boost coordination between agencies. Following this, the Chief Minister met with transport representatives to plot the restart of bus lines to Guwahati and Dimapur. This effort builds on a joint announcement made August 8 by Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, and MLA Haokholet Kipgen in Kangpokpi. Officials claim the move signals a return to stability. "The state government remains committed to restoring normal life, enhancing public confidence and ensuring a secure environment for the movement of people and goods across the state," officials said.
No major violence has occurred in nearly two months. The government now turns its attention to fighting armed groups and militants. Authorities hope these steps will finally reconnect Manipur with Assam and Nagaland.
