Imphal: Manipur Police and central security forces wrapped up a string of raids this week, hauling in an active insurgent and four alleged drug smugglers. The operations spanned multiple districts as authorities tightened the net on local narcotics networks.
Police tracked down Arambam Bobo Singh, a self-styled Major in the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (Apunba), at his home in Wangoo Mameiching on August 3. Investigators are now probing his specific role in the outfit. Meanwhile, drug busts pulled contraband and cash off the streets.
Officers arrested Md. Firoz Alam, 34, in Thoubal. They seized 530.66 grams of brown sugar, a 12-bore pump-action gun, a belt of cartridges, eight empty shotgun shells, and 1,81,280 rupees in cash. In Senapati, police stopped Arun Dutta, 50, of Dibrugarh, Assam, at the T. Khullen Naka check post. They found 80 grams of suspected brown sugar inside his Swift Dzire, registered as AS 06K1306.
The crackdown continued in Churachandpur district, where security forces raided a home in T. Khuangkhai village. They took Seikhogin Mate, 43, into custody after finding 13.230 kilograms of opium. In a separate push linked to an earlier case involving a massive 49.5 kilogram opium seizure, police picked up Jeevan Basnet, 38, in Kangpokpi district.
The police confirmed that "efforts are underway to trace the main accused and another supplier linked to the case." Authorities maintain that these coordinated efforts remain a core part of the state government's War on Drugs campaign.
