Manipur Police Arrest Four in Crackdown on Insurgency and Smuggling

Imphal: Manipur security forces arrested four people during raids on September 23. They pulled contraband and weapons off the streets in a single day. Imphal West district police worked with the 33 Assam Rifles to raid a hideout in Zone-III of Langol Game Village. They grabbed 53-year-old Konthoujam Rita Devi, also known as Maya. She lives in Yairipok Angtha Mamang Leikai. Police claim she belongs to the Revolutionary People’s Front and People’s Liberation Army. She allegedly recruited new members for the outfit.

Officers also picked up 22-year-old Md Shoaib Akhtar at North AOC. He had four gold bars weighing about 664 grams stashed away. Akhtar hails from Lilong Khunou in Thoubal district. Police handed him and the gold to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. A joint team from Patsoi police and the 164 Battalion of the Border Security Force stopped a TVS NTORQ scooter at Lilong Chajing Mamang Leikai. They detained 39-year-old Abdul Majid of Kiyamgei Muslim Takhok Makhan. They found 1.015 kg of brown sugar on him.

Special commandos apprehended 30-year-old Seram Banerjee Meitei for shooting at security forces in Khonghampat. They sent him to the Sekmai police station. A search of his property turned up an AK rifle, two INSAS magazines, one 36 HE hand grenade, and 71 live rounds. Police state that "further investigation into the case is underway." Additional weapons surfaced elsewhere in the state on the same day.
