Manipur Officials Lead Anti-Drug Drive to Secure Border Regions

Shillong: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh launched a 10-km run in Imphal on Friday to fight narcotics. The event marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and brought 1,300 participants to the historic Kangla Fort. Runners gathered to take a formal pledge against substance use.

The Chief Minister emphasized the government stance on social health and safety. He wrote on X, "The message is clear: 'Yes to Life, No to Drugs.'" He wants more public participation to fix the state's addiction crisis.

Police Director General Mukesh Singh joined the race alongside civil officials. He warned that law enforcement cannot win this war without civilian help. "The fight against drugs is not solely the responsibility of the Manipur Police," the DGP noted. He expects the public to join the mission to keep the state clean.

Manipur struggles with a massive drug problem linked to its porous border. Smugglers use the 398-km unfenced line with Myanmar to move contraband. Five districts sit on this dangerous frontier. The Chief Minister previously told NITI Aayog that the state needs better surveillance and more fences to stop the syndicates. The Ministry of Home Affairs has finished 50 km of fencing, with another 80 km currently in the works.
