Manipur Lawyers Urge Protesters to Spare Courts

Imphal: The All Manipur Bar Association pressed the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation on Thursday to exempt the judiciary from current agitation. Lawyers want the Manipur High Court and district courts to remain open, mirroring exemptions already granted to other essential services. The association claims it has maintained legal support for those arrested during the crisis.

Senior Advocate Khaidem Mani warned of a deepening judicial backlog. Only three judges currently sit on the Manipur High Court bench, leaving two sanctioned posts empty. This shortfall has buried the system under more than 6,300 pending cases. Mani blasted the disparity between regional courts, noting that the Supreme Court Collegium approved appointments for the Gauhati High Court while leaving Manipur behind. He called this a "step-motherly treatment" of Manipur.

Justice remains stalled. Effective court operations are vital to managing the state’s long-running turmoil, according to Mani. He argued that fixing the judicial vacancy crisis is the only way to resolve the underlying situation.
