Manipur Group Sets August 6 Deadline for NRC Updation

Imphal: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) issued an ultimatum to the Governor of Manipur and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on August 1. They demand state action to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) by August 6. If the government ignores the deadline, the group will launch intensified democratic agitation starting August 7.

The group claims illegal immigrants are altering the state demographic and fueling unrest. Ethnic violence that broke out on May 3, 2023, hit the Meitei community first. The conflict later spread to the Naga community, causing deaths, mass displacement, and instability. JFD Secretary (IPR) Kangjam Maharabi stated, "The influx of illegal immigrants has led to demographic imbalance in Manipur and contributed to the prevailing unrest."

The committee has already sent multiple memoranda to state and federal leaders. They held a public meeting at the Manipur Press Club on July 26, 2026, alongside other civil society groups. That meeting established the current deadline ahead of the upcoming Housing Census on August 17 and the Population Census beginning February 1 next year. The JFD maintains that identifying these individuals is the only way to secure the state and restore long-term peace.
