Manipur Highway Blockade Continues Over Killing of Six Liangmai Naga Men

Imphal: An indefinite economic blockade on National Highway-102 entered its eighth day on Friday, as members of the Liangmai Naga community continue to demand justice for the deaths of six men. Protesters have maintained a vigil at Namdilong in Manipur’s Imphal West district since June 5, restricting the movement of commercial vehicles on the key route connecting Imphal to Dimapur.

The Koubrou Range Liangmai Women’s Union launched the demonstration following the discovery of the remains of six Liangmai Nagas who disappeared on May 13. The recovery of their bodies has fueled public anger across Naga-inhabited regions. Volunteers at the blockade site are allowing private cars, emergency services, and security convoys to pass, but the movement of essential goods remains severely hampered.

The state government is managing the supply chain through alternative routes. Officials reported that 201 vehicles carrying essential commodities successfully traveled along National Highway-37 between Imphal and Silchar on Thursday. Authorities confirmed that "security convoys are being provided along sensitive stretches to ensure the free and safe passage of vehicles."

This unrest follows a series of violent clashes between the Naga and Kuki communities that began in mid-May, including the killing of three Kuki or Thadou individuals. Local authorities remain on high alert as they work to navigate the ongoing tensions and maintain logistical lifelines for the region.
