Imphal: Civil society leaders met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Tuesday to demand immediate relief for the border town of Moreh. Representatives from the Tamil Sangam, Gorkha Sena, and Manipuri Muslim Council handed the Governor a memorandum at Raj Bhavan. They warned that the border hub faces critical shortages of medicine, medical staff, and basic food items.
Economic blockades have choked the town. The United Naga Council and the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity launched an indefinite blockade after six Naga civilians were abducted and killed. Kuki groups hit back with counter-blockades on National Highway 2. The Foothills Naga Coordinating Committee added to the chaos by restricting Kuki-Zo movement between Churachandpur and Kangpokpi. This gridlock has left students stranded and school hostels empty.
The delegation detailed a grim reality. "The humanitarian situation has deteriorated as supply lines remain affected by competing blockades imposed by different groups," the memo stated. Prices have spiked as supply chains collapsed under the weight of these persistent restrictions.
Political leaders scramble to end the stalemate. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh is currently negotiating with the United Naga Council to clear the roads. Simultaneously, Kuki-Zo leaders have flown to New Delhi to lobby the Union Home Ministry and the Intelligence Bureau for protection and emergency aid.
