Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh demanded an end to highway bandhs and blockades on August 7. These protests destroy the economy. They hurt daily wage earners the most. The Chief Minister spoke at the Imperial Hall, Classic Grande in Imphal, during the opening of a two-day seminar on the demographic profile of the state.

Highway disruptions have stranded freight drivers trying to deliver essential goods to the state. The event, organized by the state Home Department and the Manipur State Population Commission, aims to find solutions through expert dialogue. Khemchand Singh emphasized that any resolutions must remain within the Constitution of India. He stated, "The state government remained ready to support measures that serve the interests of the public."

Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam addressed the assembly as well. He confirmed that the Manipur government informed the Central Government of its intent to conduct a National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise. This would operate under existing legal frameworks. The Ministry of Home Affairs has already set up a committee to track demographic shifts across the country. Konthoujam urged citizens to ignore political divisions to protect the interests of indigenous groups.

Attendees included Commissioner N. Ashok Kumar, State Population Commissioner M. Manimoham Meitei, and Secretary Dr. M. Veto Singh. Various community leaders, academics, and civil society representatives also attended the proceedings.
