Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh is calling for communal harmony after a villager was killed during an ambush in the Kangpokpi district. The attack occurred on June 8 in a forest located between the villages of Pongringlong and Pondaijang.

Armed Kuki militants reportedly ambushed three men, resulting in the death of 58-year-old Chunjanglung Panmei and leaving two others injured. Police officials confirmed the victim was a resident of Pongringlong Part-I. A team from the New Keithelmanbi Police Station, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Samir, recovered the body and transferred it to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal for a postmortem examination.

The Chief Minister expressed his condolences to the victim's family and pledged state government support. He characterized the violence as a "heinous and cowardly act" and confirmed that joint operations between the Manipur Police and central paramilitary forces are currently underway to capture the attackers.

The killing sparked immediate public outcry, leading hundreds of residents and members of the Zeliangrong community to protest at Charoi Pandongba Bazar. Demonstrators blocked National Highway-37, demanding justice for the victim and calling for increased security in the region. Authorities have since intensified security across the district to prevent further unrest and maintain order.
