Imphal: Joychandra Konthoujam demanded a radical push for agricultural self-reliance today. He spoke at a farmers' training and seed distribution event held at the Langathel Leikom Bazar Community Hall. The Manipur Agriculture Department and the United Farmer Club Langathel organized the session. Konthoujam, chairman of the Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipur War 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak Manipur, served as the chief guest.
He warned that residents must protect farmland and grow local crops to end the state's dependence on imports. Highway disruptions often cut off essential goods, making local output a necessity. "Greater dependence on locally produced food would help reduce reliance on supplies from outside the State," Konthoujam said. He pushed for modern farming techniques across both valley and hill regions to improve rural livelihoods and protect the environment.
District Agriculture Officer R.K. Umakanta Singh led the meeting. Other officials present included Agriculture Officer W. Subhash Singh, Langathel Gram Panchayat Chairperson Tomba Singh, and District Officer of Agriculture Linthoi Wathum. Konthoujam closed the event by calling for community unity. He insisted that peace is the only way to drive statewide development.
