Kohima: The Nagaland State Legal Services Authority recently partnered with the Phek District Legal Services Authority to host a legal awareness session at Christian Mission Higher Secondary School. The event focused on the NALSA Scheme on Access to Justice for Victims of Human-Wildlife Conflict, an initiative designed to support residents living in forest-fringe and tribal regions.

Neiko Akami, member secretary of the NSLSA, detailed how the scheme provides legal aid and financial relief for those affected by animal attacks or crop destruction. He noted that victims are entitled to support based on the severity of their losses. Akami explained that the scheme facilitates legal aid, awareness, compensation and allied reliefs in line with Articles 21 and 48A of the Constitution. He further encouraged residents to contact district authorities for assistance, citing successful compensation efforts for elephant-related damage in Wokha district.

During the session, legal professionals also covered broader safety and environmental laws. Retainer lawyer Sekhotso Rokha educated students on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, specifically covering the reporting of offenses and personal safety. Additionally, panel lawyer Thukutalu Chizo discussed the Wildlife Protection Act and its 2022 amendments. She reminded the audience of their constitutional responsibility to protect the environment while urging students to foster empathy for local wildlife.
