Shillong: A significant landslide has forced the complete closure of the Shillong-Dawki road in Meghalaya after floodwaters destroyed a supporting embankment. The collapse occurred at Chainage 25+200 near Laitlyngkot village, leaving the carriageway unsafe for vehicles and stranding motorists in the area. This section of the road is currently undergoing an expansion project managed by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal ordered an immediate halt to all traffic beyond Laitlyngkot on Sunday. Officials indicated that the damage is substantial and restoration efforts will likely require several days to complete. In an official notice regarding the closure, the Deputy Commissioner stated, "In the interest of public safety and to prevent any untoward incident, the Shillong-Dawki road will remain closed for public and vehicular movement from Laitlyngkot village onwards with immediate effect until further orders."

The region has faced frequent travel disruptions lately due to seasonal weather impacts and ongoing construction activities. Commuters traveling to Dawki are now being directed to use alternative routes through Shillong-Sohra-Sohbar-Dawki or Shillong-Jowai-Amlarem-Dawki. The district administration has advised drivers to remain cautious, follow guidance from local traffic police, and monitor India Meteorological Department updates regarding changing weather conditions.
