Kohima: The Kulolau Lazami Küqhakulu, also known as the Western Lazami Union, has launched a program to provide free academic books to college students. The distribution drive, which began Thursday at CT Square in Chümoukedima, is scheduled to run through May 24. To accommodate Sunday church services, the event will open at 4 pm on that day.
KLK president K.A. Jacob described the initiative as a way to foster a stronger reading culture among young people. He expressed concern that college students now rely too heavily on digital devices, which can hinder their critical thinking and vocabulary development. By providing physical books, the organization hopes to offer a richer academic experience, particularly for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Sponsored by a donation from Er. Vitoshe Swunetho, the collection is valued between 3 lakh and 4 lakh rupees. The donated resources focus primarily on Arts and Commerce subjects. Because school textbooks are already provided up to the higher secondary level, this program is specifically tailored for those currently enrolled in college.
Organizers have already begun distributing the first batch of books to students from the northern region. Those unable to attend in person may send a representative or submit a list through designated contacts to ensure students in areas like Kohima and Dimapur can still receive materials. Depending on future funding, the union plans to evaluate the possibility of turning this into an annual project.
