KSU Challenges Meghalaya Government Over School Exam Exemptions

Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union challenged the Meghalaya government over its decision to grant exam exemptions to minority and missionary schools. Education department officials excused these institutions from common exams for classes VI through VIII, citing existing internal testing systems. The Union argues this creates an uneven playing field.

KSU education secretary Alerick Kharjana led a delegation to meet Director of School Education and Literacy BJ Kharshandi. They want to know why specific schools get a pass. Kharjana told reporters the policy change hurts the goal of academic consistency across the state. "The exemptions contradict the department’s stated objective of ensuring uniformity and academic standards across the state," Kharjana said.

The group also slammed the state for repeatedly shuffling the Social Science exam date. Originally set for June 23, the test jumped to June 29 and then to June 30. Constant schedule shifts confuse students and force schools to waste money on reprint costs for question papers. KSU leaders are now pushing for better administrative planning to restore order to the system.
