Kohima: Kiphire police have arrested and suspended an armed branch constable accused of raping an elderly woman in the district. The incident, reported from the High School Ward, led to a case being registered at the Kiphire Women Police Station on June 17.
The accused, identified as Heluikie Nsanglung, who also goes by the name Amos, serves as an armed branch constable with DEF Kiphire. According to the police public relations officer, officers apprehended the suspect on the same day the complaint was filed. Both the victim and the suspect underwent medical examinations at the district hospital. Preliminary reports suggest the constable was under the influence of alcohol during his examination.
A forensic team from Dimapur arrived on June 18 to collect evidence from the crime scene, following procedures mandated by new criminal laws. The police department has initiated departmental proceedings against the constable for misconduct, and he remains in custody while the investigation continues. Regarding the ongoing inquiry, the police department stated, Kiphire DEF and Nagaland police were committed to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation and assured that all necessary legal steps would be taken to ensure justice is delivered at the earliest.
In a separate incident, Dimapur police have also arrested 29-year-old truck driver Saiful Islam. The suspect, a resident of Assam, is accused of raping a 15-year-old girl from Kohima.
