Guwahati: The Kamrup district administration has issued a formal ban on all river activities to prevent accidents as monsoon rainfall causes water levels to surge. District Magistrate Deba Kumar Mishra implemented the order under Section 30 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, citing safety risks from strong currents, sudden flooding, and riverbank erosion.
Under the new directive, residents are strictly prohibited from bathing, swimming, or diving in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries until further notice. The administration cited recurring drowning incidents and hidden hazards as the primary reasons for this measure. The order states that the public must refrain from any activity that could expose them or others to the risk of drowning and river-related accidents.
Local police, revenue officials, and disaster response agencies have been instructed to monitor river ghats and sensitive areas to ensure public compliance. Officials warned that anyone who violates these restrictions will face legal consequences under the Disaster Management Act and other applicable laws. Magistrate Mishra has urged the public to remain cautious and cooperate with authorities to ensure safety throughout the remainder of the monsoon season.
