Jirang MLA Claims Byrnihat Is No Longer India's Most Polluted Town

Shillong: Byrnihat is no longer the most polluted town in India. Cabinet Minister and Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun declared the shift during a Tuesday press briefing in Shillong. The Ri-Bhoi town previously held the top spot on national pollution lists at least twice in recent years.

Air quality remains a persistent headache. Sohtun claimed the state government is now enforcing strict environmental rules on local industries to force compliance. He argued that the blame does not rest solely on Meghalaya. Industries operating just across the border in Assam contribute heavily to the toxic smog. "Meghalaya and Assam must coordinate efforts to effectively tackle air pollution in the region," Sohtun said.

A new plan is in the works. A private firm recently showcased an air filtration machine to state officials. The device is currently undergoing field trials. If the technology performs as expected, the state could deploy it to scrub the air and drive pollution numbers down further.
