Shillong: Members of the Jaintia National Council Western Zone locked the Airtel office at Ladthalaboh in Jowai on Thursday. The move targeted the company for failing to fix dead zones. Protesters demanded better network service across the region.
Hamehi Bamon led the JNC Western Zone team during the shutdown. The organization previously met with senior Airtel officials on January 28 to address abysmal coverage at Woodland Hospital in Sabah Muswang. Airtel promised to build a new mobile tower within four months once they picked a site. That timeline passed with no construction work in sight.
The JNC claims it tried to follow up with the company multiple times. Those efforts yielded nothing. The group says the inaction ignores the needs of residents and essential services. The JNC stated, "The organisation had held a meeting with senior Airtel officials on January 28 to discuss poor network coverage."
Airtel remains silent. The JNC warned that it will ramp up pressure if the company keeps stalling. They want the tower built now.
