Jowai Residents Warn of Contamination in Myntdu River

Shillong: Residents of Jowai raised alarms on August 18 after spotting youths washing large catering utensils in the Myntdu River. The incident occurred near the Myntdu reservoir dam. This specific site serves as the main intake point for the Public Health Engineering Department. They draw water here to supply households throughout the town.

Locals fear grease and food waste from the equipment now threaten the local water supply. The incident exposed major gaps in how authorities monitor and protect the river. Residents want stricter surveillance and immediate action to stop these polluters.

The community is pushing for consequences for those involved. One resident stated, "legal action be taken against those found violating regulations meant to safeguard the town’s water supply from pollution." They expect officials to secure the reservoir before further contamination occurs.
