Jowai village leaders fund legal fight to clean Myntdu River

Shillong: The Lion Mission Compound Dorbar Shnong in Jowai opened its wallet this Saturday to save a dying river. Village leaders handed over cash to Khroo L. Pariat, the president of the Khooid Ya Ka Wah Myntdu campaign. They need the money for a heated legal fight at the National Green Tribunal to protect and restore the Myntdu River.

The river matters. It supplies drinking water via the PHE department and keeps local paddy farms alive. Thousands rely on it daily. Waheh Shnong Dauni Hiwot Synrem led the delegation during the handover. Assistant Waheh Shnong Shlur Sumer joined him, with supporters Chwaki Najiar, Jop Lato, and Snar Laloo present for the transaction.

The village body now calls on other dorbars and locals within the catchment area to chip in for the cause. They want to ensure the water keeps flowing for future generations. The group remains firm in its mission to protect local livelihoods. As the Dorbar noted, the river serves as a "critical lifeline for Jowai and its surrounding areas."
