Jaintia Elders Push for Law to Guard Matrilineal Heritage

Shillong: A delegation from Synjuk Ki Rangbahkur met with Thombor Shiwat, the Chief Executive Member of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council, to demand immediate legal action. They want the government to lock in the matrilineal system of clan lineage through new legislation. They need this protection fast.

The group insists on codifying these traditions under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. This move aims to keep the social and cultural identity of the Khasi and Jaintia people intact. The elders argue that formal legal status for the Dorbar Kur remains essential for their survival. Without it, their cultural roots face erosion.

The elders proposed a system to empower the Rangbah Kur to maintain their roles. The delegation stated, "The formal recognition is necessary for elders to effectively perform their customary roles in preserving traditions and lineage practices." This plan would solidify customary institutions and pass a unique heritage down to the next generation.
