Internal Friction Rocks VPP as Executive Member Resigns

Shillong: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) is facing a significant political challenge within the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council after the abrupt resignation of Executive Member Pynkhrawborlin Kharjahrin. Kharjahrin, who managed Council Assets, stepped down on June 20, citing increasing responsibilities in his constituency. Many political observers remain skeptical of this explanation given the timing of the departure.

The resignation comes as rumors of deep internal friction and potential mass defections circulate within the party ranks. Sources suggest that as many as three or four MDCs might leave the VPP, a move that would threaten the stability of the current Executive Committee. During the ongoing budget session, Chief Executive Member Winston Tony Lyngdoh assumed responsibility for the Council Assets Department, signaling a swift transition of duties.

Tensions rose further when Mawlai MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang claimed at a party event that VPP members were being offered money by the National People’s Party to switch allegiances. This prompted a sharp response from Nongshken MDC Grace Mary Kharpuri, who said, "Challenge Marbaniang to name names and provide proof."

Although the VPP holds a majority with 18 seats following its 2025 election victory, any confirmed defections could leave the Executive Committee vulnerable. As the party prepares for the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election in the Shillong Parliamentary constituency, the silence from party leadership remains notable. Attempts to reach VPP president Ardent M. Basaiawmoit for comment on these internal developments have been unsuccessful.
