Internal Dispute Threatens New South West Khasi Hills Development Block

Shillong: A local village council warns that infighting might kill a proposed government project. The Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Nobosohphoh Syiemship fears the state will scrap the planned Community and Rural Development Block in the Shiliang Um Rilang area. Government officials want to place the facility in South West Khasi Hills, but locals cannot agree on the site.

Two groups, the Mawnore Block Demand Committee and the Mawsaw Block Demand Committee, are currently butting heads. One faction wants the headquarters in Warsan Lyngdoh, while the other pushes for Mawsaw. This standoff has stalled progress.

SRS Nobosohphoh Syiemship President Bokstone Thongni warned that the government might walk away from the deal if the locals keep bickering. "We are concerned about the fate of the upcoming block because the two committees are pursuing separate agendas," Thongni said.

Thongni urged the groups to find middle ground for the sake of the region. He noted that residents have wanted this project for decades. Now, he says the area must show unity to get the block built before 2027. Time is running out.
