Illegal soil excavation threatens riverbanks in Assam's Nagaon district

Guwahati: Residents of Nagaon district are sounding the alarm over illegal soil excavation along the Kolong River. Local communities report that land mafias are using heavy machinery to remove soil in areas like Kashari Gaon and Auniati near Puranigudam, reportedly selling the earth for profit.

This unregulated activity coincides with an ongoing erosion crisis that already threatens multiple villages, including Karhali Gaon and Kolongpar Halowa Gaon. The loss of bank stability has recently caused structural damage, most notably to a historic Shiva temple in Kadhali village.

Local citizens have criticized the Nagaon Forest Department and the district administration for their perceived failure to halt these operations. People living nearby worry that the continued digging removes vital land buffers, placing their homes and essential infrastructure at greater risk of collapse.

The community is now calling for urgent government intervention to stop the excavation. They warn that without immediate action, the environmental impact will exacerbate the vulnerability of these riverside settlements to future erosion events.
