Kohima: The ICAR Research Complex for the NEH Region in Nagaland held a training session for farmers on June 9 in Singrijan village, Chümoukedima. The event focused on quality rice seed production to help local growers improve crop productivity and achieve seed self-reliance.
Dr. H. Kalita, head of the regional center, emphasized that high-quality seeds are vital for food security. He urged the attendees to establish seed production systems within their villages to decrease their reliance on outside suppliers. Scientist Dr. Harendra Verma led the technical instruction, covering essential practices like varietal selection, pest management, and post-harvest handling.
During the session, Dr. Verma presented seven new rice breeding lines specifically developed for Nagaland. He noted that these varieties offer superior performance, stating that they possess "higher yield potential, wider adaptability and tolerance to major stresses."
Thirty farmers and representatives from the State Agriculture Department attended the workshop. The program concluded with the distribution of improved rice seeds to participants, providing them with the necessary tools to begin implementing these scientific methods on their own farms.
