ICAR Highlights Critical Role of Quality Rice Seeds for Nagaland Farmers

Kohima: Dr. H. Kalita, head of the ICAR Regional Centre in Medziphema, emphasized that high-quality, genetically pure seeds are the foundation of productive and resilient agriculture. Speaking at a training session in Singrijan Village on June 9, 2026, he noted that such seeds are essential for achieving better yields and ensuring long-term food security.

Dr. Kalita encouraged farmers to establish decentralized seed production systems at the village level. He suggested this approach would strengthen local availability, decrease reliance on outside sources, and help spread the use of improved crop varieties. During the event, scientist Dr. Harendra Verma explained that certified seeds are vital for maintaining varietal purity, keeping seeds healthy, and reaching maximum yield potential.

"Quality seed plays a pivotal role as the foundation of a productive and resilient agricultural system," Dr. Kalita stated. Dr. Verma also introduced seven new rice breeding lines specifically developed for the regional climate of Nagaland, noting that these varieties offer better adaptability and increased tolerance to environmental stress.

The training program provided instruction on the entire production cycle, including field inspection standards, integrated nutrient management, and scientific storage techniques. The event brought together 30 farmers and State Agriculture Department officials to discuss modern agricultural practices. The program concluded with the distribution of improved rice seeds to participants to encourage immediate on-farm adoption.
