Guwahati: Guwahati authorities have introduced a new mandate requiring all Green Bus drivers to display their driving licences on their vehicle windshields. This move aims to improve traffic discipline and increase accountability among public transport operators following initial challenges with driver conduct.

Deputy Commissioner of Police for Traffic, Jayanta Sarathi Bora, noted that previous enforcement efforts were insufficient because they targeted the vehicles rather than the individuals behind the wheel. Regarding the shift in strategy, Bora stated, "Since these are government-operated vehicles, merely taking action against the vehicles themselves was not an effective solution."

The decision followed consultations within the District Road Safety Committee, which is led by the District Commissioner. Under the new protocol, police officers will photograph the displayed licence when a traffic violation occurs. These details are then sent to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation or the Assam State Transport Corporation for departmental disciplinary action.

Traffic police report that the measure has already bolstered compliance among drivers. Officials from the police department and the state transport corporation plan to maintain strict monitoring, warning that any drivers who fail to adhere to traffic regulations will face formal consequences.
