GSU Demands Halt to Waste Dumping in East Garo Hills Stream

Shillong: The Garo Students’ Union Nengkhra regional unit fired a complaint at the local Bazar committee this week. They want an immediate end to the dumping of market trash into the Wenok stream near Dobu village. The stream feeds directly into the Rongtam River.

Pollution flows downstream into the Nengkhra area. It causes major health problems. Locals report that children are suffering from skin infections and water-borne diseases because of the filth. The river serves as the main water source for farming and housework for families throughout the region.

The union warned that the toxic buildup is killing off fish and wrecking the local ecosystem. “This is severely affecting our locality,” the GSU stated in their petition. The union now demands the committee set up a working disposal system for Dobu Market immediately.

Change must happen now. If the committee ignores these demands, the union plans to escalate the issue to the District Administration.
