Government Plans New Jal Board to Manage Shillong Water Supply

Shillong: State officials are pushing to create a Jal Board to take control of water delivery in Shillong. The current system relies on the Shillong Municipal Board. That will end soon. Government planners are currently circulating the proposal among various departments for final vetting.

The Law Department reviewed the plan and sent queries to the Public Health Engineering Department. The PHE Department responded to those concerns. The state government expects this new agency to streamline the mess.

The board faces a two-stage rollout. It will first manage potable water in Tura before expanding across the state. Sources said "the matter is currently under discussion" as officials wait to finalize the transition of authority from the municipal body to the new entity.
