Kohima: The Global Naga Forum officially welcomed Ajit Lal, a retired IPS officer and former Joint Intelligence Committee chairman, as the new interlocutor for Indo-Naga political talks. The group also lauded the Indian government's decision to bring a Union Minister or a panel of ministers into the negotiations. They expect these changes to inject renewed urgency into the peace process and create a conducive environment for an honourable, inclusive and enduring settlement.
This move follows a September 12, 2024, meeting in Kohima. About 45 Naga civil society groups and tribal hohos pushed the government to appoint a new negotiator and elevate the dialogue to the highest political level. The forum credited Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio, MPs Phangnon Konyak and Supongmeren Jamir, plus various student bodies, church groups, and NGOs for their work in securing these changes.
Peace remains elusive. Nearly three decades of negotiations have dragged on without a final result. The forum urged the NSCN (IM) leadership and New Delhi to treat these talks with extreme focus and sincerity. They believe the Naga people deserve peace and dignity. Both sides must now rise to this historic responsibility to finally end this long armed conflict.
