Guwahati: Gauhati University kicked off the academic year Wednesday during a Central Orientation Programme for new postgraduate students. The event aimed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and campus life. Vice-Chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta told the incoming class to look past simple test scores. He wants students to focus on problem-solving, creativity, and solid values. "Marks are important in the present times, but it is the ability to think, solve problems, apply practical knowledge and uphold values that ultimately shapes a student's future," Mahanta said.
The administration wants students to respect the history of Gauhati University while jumping into modern tech. Hiren Ch. Nath, a retired Special ADGP for Assam, also took the stage. He hammered home the need for discipline, perseverance, and personal responsibility. Students heard from a range of voices. Entrepreneur and Assam Gaurav Award winner Anupam Deka pushed for innovation and self-reliance. He told the room to identify their personal strengths and sharpen their skills for the workforce.
Registrar Utpal Sarma and Academic Registrar Rajib Handique joined the proceedings alongside Secretary of University Classes Ranjan Kumar Kakati. Faculty members and parents watched as the university brought the new cohort into the fold. The event emphasized that academic success relies on more than just high marks.
