Shillong: Former Congress legislator Mohendro Rapsang will officially join the Bharatiya Janata Party this Tuesday. He brings a contingent of supporters to the party headquarters in Shillong for the induction. State BJP president Rikman G. Momin and other party heavyweights will host the event.
Rapsang has a long history in West Shillong politics. He narrowly dropped the 2013 election to UDP candidate Paul Lyngdoh by 481 votes. He flipped that result in 2018, beating Lyngdoh by 1,984 votes to secure a seat in the Assembly until 2023.
His career hit a wall after he backed the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government. Congress bosses suspended him for the move. He eventually joined the NPP to run in the 2023 election, but Lyngdoh claimed the seat by a margin of 3,485 votes. Rapsang quit the NPP in February, citing personal reasons.
Rapsang's political shifts reflect the fluid nature of local alliances. He aims for a fresh start with the saffron party. "Former Congress MLA from West Shillong, Mohendro Rapsang will formally join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday along with a number of his supporters," the report confirmed.
