Guwahati: Former Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka joined a new task force aimed at fixing India's broken examination system. Prime Minister Narendra Modi formed the multidisciplinary panel on Sunday. It follows major protests by the Cockroach Janta Party over cheating allegations, including the NEET UG 2026 paper leak. The group seeks to boost transparency and digital security.
Technology expert and Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani will chair the committee. Nilekani previously led the Unique Identification Authority of India. Deka, an Assam-born IPS officer, brings deep experience in counter-terrorism and national security to the table. His role focuses on tightening security protocols to stop future leaks. The government hopes to regain public trust.
Other experts joining the panel include former ISRO Chairman S Somanath, IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti, former Education Secretary Anita Karwal, and logistics expert Amrit Lal Meena. They will overhaul the National Testing Agency by improving monitoring and administrative systems. The committee aims to build a tamper-proof framework for future candidates.
Modi promised legal consequences for those who broke the law. "The Government of India is continuously taking various measures for the future of students. Those who tampered with the students' future are languishing in jail," the Prime Minister stated in a video message. The government is also pushing for new legislation and fast-track courts to punish offenders.
