Guwahati: Former Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka has joined a high-powered task force tasked with rebuilding India's examination system. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the committee on Sunday. It follows widespread protests from the Cockroach Janta Party regarding the NEET UG 2026 question paper leak. The panel will focus on fixing systemic flaws.
Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani chairs the multidisciplinary group. They aim to boost security, transparency, and technical reliability across national testing. Deka, a senior IPS officer from Assam, brings decades of experience in intelligence and counter-terrorism. He will lead efforts to harden security protocols against fraud. The mission is clear. Modi signaled a shift in strategy during a video message. He noted that authorities have already arrested those responsible for past scandals. The government is also pushing for new legislation and fast-track courts. "Those who tampered with the students' future are languishing in jail. We have already established fast-track courts," Modi said.
The committee features a diverse bench of experts. Joining Deka and Nilekani are former ISRO Chairman S Somanath, IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti, former Education Secretary Anita Karwal, and logistics expert Amrit Lal Meena. They will overhaul the National Testing Agency by improving digital monitoring and administrative oversight. The goal is to make the entire process tamper-proof. Millions of candidates depend on these reforms.
