Former GHADC leader P.K. Sangma dies at age 75

Shillong: P.K. Sangma is dead. The former Chief Executive Member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council died Thursday morning in Williamnagar after a short illness. He spent his final days under medical care.

Sangma stood as a heavyweight in local politics. He first grabbed the top spot at the GHADC in 2009 while representing the Nationalist Congress Party. By 2011, he jumped to the Congress party and reclaimed the leadership seat following a mass shift by council members.

Before his career in the chambers, he headed the Garo Students Union. Friends and political rivals alike remembered his influence on the region. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma offered his condolences, praising the man for his connection to everyday people. The Chief Minister expressed his "heartfelt grief over the loss, honouring the late leader’s long-serving tenure as MDC and his dedicated public service in Garo Hills."

The region prepares to say goodbye. Mourners expect his funeral service to take place this Friday.
