Shillong: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stopped in Larnai village on Saturday. She spent time with local artisans preserving the centuries-old tradition of black clay pottery. This craft holds a geographical indication tag and represents the deep cultural pride of the West Jaintia Hills. She wanted to see the work firsthand.

Sitharaman watched a live demonstration of the craft. She observed the entire process, including how the workers prepare the clay, hand-mould the pots, and finish the pieces with traditional firing techniques. This visit highlighted the federal government's push to back indigenous knowledge and sustain unique artistic practices.

The visit marked the end of her two-day tour of Meghalaya on June 19 and 20. She spent the time looking at ways to boost regional infrastructure and sustainable farming. She also checked on the progress of various externally aided projects. Regarding the region, officials noted, "The interaction highlighted the government's interest in supporting local artisans and preserving unique cultural practices."
