Shillong: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman arrived in Meghalaya on June 19 for a two-day tour dedicated to boosting the state's infrastructure, agriculture, and healthcare sectors. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma greeted the minister at Bhoirymbong in the Ri Bhoi district to kick off the multi-district visit.
A primary objective of the trip is the inauguration of the largest organic spice processing facility in the Northeast. Developed by the Eastern Ri Bhoi Organic Farmer Producer Company, the plant aims to provide significant value to local farmers and expand the reach of the regional organic agricultural industry.
Sitharaman will address a seminar regarding the use of international assistance for public welfare. During a central event at the U Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong, she will lay the foundation stone for new development works valued at ₹1,200 crore. These efforts highlight the government's strategy to accelerate growth through external funding, with officials noting the state's progress in managing such initiatives.
The minister's schedule covers Ri Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, and West Jaintia Hills. Her final engagements on Saturday include a student interaction at Kiang Nangbah Government College and the official opening of the Khliehtyrshi Primary Health Centre. Regarding the broader impact of these investments, the visit aims to ensure that the region continues "accelerating development in the Northeast through investments in critical sectors."
