Shillong: Linguists and native speakers finished a two-day workshop in Ghasura Gaon on Saturday. They met to save the endangered Koch language. The event focused on the documentation and archiving of the local tongue.
The UK-based Foundation for Endangered Languages bankrolled the project. Project Director Prangshu Manjul ran the event alongside the Koch Krorang Mathop, the official literature society of the Koch people in Meghalaya. Nirmal Koch serves as the president of the group.
Scholars arrived to share expertise. Dr. Palash Kumar Nath and Dr. Krishna Boro traveled from Gauhati University. They specialize in language description and endangered linguistics. Dr. Monali Longmailai of Assam University, Silchar, also attended. She studies Tibeto-Burman languages, morphosyntax, and language typology. The collective goal remains the "Documentation and Archiving of Koch Language" for future generations.
